Acupuncture
Acupuncture Totnes
Acupuncture has been around for thousands of years and is still the most used form of medical care in China. It works on the basis that there is an imbalance of qi. This can either result in a blockage of qi in the channel or a deficiency. By receiving acupuncture the aim is therefore to either move qi or to nourish it. Stress, nutrition, emotions, general lifestyle or infection can be some of the causes for imbalance.
Acupuncture can be effective in the treatment of many conditions such as but is not limited to:
Fertility
Gynaecology
Pregnancy/ labour
Muscular aches
Depression/ anxiety
Sleep
Migraines
Chronic pain
Hayfever
IBS
Bells Palsy
Autoimmune diseases
Following a consultation, hair thin needles are inserted to carefully selected points around the body. You can be clothed throughout the treatment, though we recommend baggy clothes would be best for easier access.
Depending on the treatment goal, we may also use cupping and or some massage (especially with muscular pain). Moxa may also be used in the treatment.
Moxa is made out of mugwort which will either be placed on the needle or on the skin and then burnt (DON'T worry it just creates a warmth to the area!).
The British Acupuncture Council have prepared a range of fact sheets summarising recent research, available here

I am also providing sessions that mix both massage and acupuncture. This is a great combination for muscular skeletal aches and pains such as:
Repetitive Strain
Tennis Elbow
Muscular stiffness
Plantar Fasciitis
Neck stiffness
Sciatica
General aches and pains
A full history will be taken (please note it is always recommended that you see a Dr re an injury our long stan) of what happened, the pain/ discomfort that you feel and your medical history. I will palpate the areas before starting the session.
